metoprolol dosage

Metoprolol is the usually prescribed for adults suffering from the following conditions and the Metoprolol dosage is the amount given:

-Hypertension
-Congestive Heart Failure
-Supraventricular Tachycardia
-Angina Pectoris
-Angina Pectoris Prophylaxis
-Myocardial Infarction

And the usual paediatric dose for sufferers of:

-Hypertension

The adult Metoprolol dosage for Hypertension is usually as follows:

Initial dosage: 100mg orally in 1 / 2 divided doses.

Maintenance Metoprolol dosage: 100mg – 450mg daily.

Extended release could be used at the same as the total daily amount given once a day.

The adult dosage for Congestive Heart Failure is usually as follows:
Initial dosage: 25mg once a day, of the XL formulation, two weeks for patients suffering with NYHA class II heart failure. Of the XL formulation for patients suffering with more severe heart failure, 12.5mg once a day.

Maintenance dosage: The dosage then should be doubled every two weeks, up to 200 mg, or up to the highest dosage level allowed.

If heart failure worsening does occur, it may be treated with doses of diuretics increased. It could also be necessary for the dose to be lowered or for the treatment to be temporarily discontinued. Until the worsened heart failure symptoms stabilise, the dosage should not be increased.

The initial difficulties with titration shouldn’t prevent later attempts to start therapy. But, the dosage of Metoprolol should be reduced if patients suffering from heart failure experience symptomatic bradycardia.

The adult dosage for Supraventricular Tachycardia is usually as follows:

Initial dosage: 100mg orally in 1 / 2 divided doses.

Maintenance dosage: 100 – 450 mg daily.

Extended release could be used at the same as the total daily amount given once a day.

The adult dosage for Angina Pectoris is usually as follows:

Initial dosage: 100mg orally in 1 / 2 divided doses.

Maintenance dosage: 100 – 400 mg daily.

Extended release could be used at the same as the total daily amount given once a day.

The adult dosage for Angina Pectoris Prophylaxis is usually as follows:

Initial dosage: 100mg orally in 1 / 2 divided doses.

Maintenance dosage: 100 – 450 mg daily.

Extended release could be used at the same as the total daily amount given once a day.

The adult dosage for Myocardial Infarction is usually as follows:
Early treatment:
IV: Three bolus 5mg Metroprolol injections, given with two minute breaks in between.

Oral: For patients who have the full 15mg IV dosage, metoprolol tablets, 50mg every six hours should be admitted fifteen minutes after the last IV dose. This should then be continued for 48 hours.

Maintenance dosage: 100mg orally twice daily. Patients who do not take the full IV dosage should be started on 25mg or 50mg Metoprolol tablets every six hours, fifteen minutes after the last intravenous injection dose, or as soon as their medical condition allows them to.

Late Treatment:
Oral: 100mg twice daily.

Patients with contraindications to the treatment in the early phase of suspected or known myocardial infarction, or who appear not to take the full early treatment or patients whose physician wants to delay therapy for any other reasoning, should be started on Metoprolol tablets as soon as the medical condition they have allows them to.

The Paediatric dosage for Hypertension is usually as follows:

1 – 17 years of age, Immediate release:
Initial dosage: 1- 2mg/kg/day, given in 2 divided doses. The dosage should be fixed to the patient based on the patient response.

Maximum dosage: 6mg/kg daily – less than or equal to 200mg daily.
