Metroprolol Succ er is a type of beta- blocker that has a direct effect on how the blood flows through arteries and veins. It is used to treat conditions such as angina (pains in the chest) and hypertension (high blood pressure).

However, Metroprolol Succ er has also been known to be given to people as an effective way to prevent heart attacks. It can also go by the names of Metroprolol Succinate, Lopressor and Toprol-xl.

However, this drug should not be taken by people who have any of the following conditions:

  • A serious heart issue such as heart block, sick sinus syndrome, or slow (than average) heart rate.
  • Any kind of serious circulation problems.
  • Severe heart failure that has required you to stay in hospital.
  • A history of slow or irregular heart rates that have caused you to feel light headed or faint.

Like the majority of drugs, Metroprolol has a few side effects that need to be considered before you decide to take it. It has been known to cause drowsiness, dizziness, memory problems, mild itching (a rash may start to form), diarrhoea, nightmares and difficulties with sleeping.

Although experiencing any of the above side effects is considered normal when taking Metroprolol, there are some symptoms where, if you are experiencing them, you are encouraged to seek medical assistance as soon as you can. These symptoms include: chest pains, pounding heart beats, heart palpitations (often described as a fluttering feeling in your chest), fainting or feeling very light headed, shortness of breath even after mild exertion, swelling of hands or feet, the loss of appetite, very dark or abnormal looking urine, upper stomach pain and extreme nausea.

Taking Metroprolol Succ er has not always been known to bring down the risk of heart problems. In some patients, it has actually worsened the symptoms of heart failure. It has also caused alterations in the blood sugar levels and covered up signs of low blood sugar for example, rapid pulse rates.

It can also have an effect on the lives of the people taking it. In the past, taking Metroprolol has cause some people to become less alert of what is going on around them and has this made it difficult for people to do things like drive cars or operate machines because it puts the rest of the public at risk.

Metroprolol Succ er is known as an ‘extended release’ drug. This means that the pill only has to be taken once a day for it to have full effect. It makes it ideal for someone with a busy lifestyle because it allows them to not have to worry about taking it for the rest of the day and it is easy to fit into your daily routine.
